It’s a case of never mind the width, feel the quality this week!?! So just a short
update with a couple of pieces of good news.

A view of FR 20 after repair. Just a bit of touching up of the black paint required!Firstly, Furness Railway No. 20 has been re-assembled after repairs to its
right-hand piston head, cylinder cover and crossheads. An in-steam test to
check that all is now well is due to take place on the Pontypool & Blaenavon
Railway this Sunday. Sam and Alan have kindly volunteered to make the
journey down to South Wales for the occasion.

The chaise longue ready for passengersSecondly, at long last and after some struggles and enforced learning, the
repairs and re-upholstering of the chaise longue in the east saloon of Great
Eastern Railway royal saloon No. 5 have been completed. It should be
emphasised that this has been done entirely in house, so well done to all
concerned. John Dixon has, as can be seen from the photo, also completed the
job of covering of the east saloon floor with plywood, ready for the new carpet
to be laid.

Just a short update this week.

We are still waiting to receive confirmation of the method of repair to FR 20’s front right hand cylinder cover which is currently under assessment with Cast Iron Welding services at Coalville. However, the go-ahead has been given for the repair work to the motion, and this is being undertaken by the West Somerset Railway at Williton.

Back at Preston, the final pieces of concrete are being removed from GWR 0-6-2T No. 5643’s smokebox to enable the boiler to be lifted. This is now provisionally scheduled for Friday, 30th June.

Apologies once again for another gap in blogs – yes, holidays have got in the way, a good time to have them given the very hot weather that we are experiencing!

FR 20 in the carriage shed at Blaenavon minus front buffer beamMany are naturally asking about Furness Railway No. 20 which suffered a mechanical failure on May 20th at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. The damaged right hand cylinder cover has been despatched to Cast Iron Welding Services at Coalville for assessment and we await their verdict. Back at Blaenavon the front buffer beam of the locomotive has been removed to facilitate access and to enable the necessary motion repairs to be undertaken. We are grateful to the people at Blaenavon and the West Somerset Railway for their assistance in furthering the repairs. The above photograph of FR 20 minus its front beam was kindly supplied by the P&BR.

5643 minus cladding 10.06.23Back at Preston, the work to prepare GWR 0-6-2T No. 5643 for the removal of its boiler has proceeded apace. As the photo illustrates, all the cladding has been removed and most of the smokebox retaining nuts have now been removed.

John Davis bottoming the royal toilet seatJohn Davis has been tackling the job of preparing the royal toilet fittings for a coat of varnish.

Finally, the ‘Money for Nothing’ programme on BBC TV has obviously set people thinking, with the result that RSR footplate crew Jack Davenport and Peter Liddle are seen here with their new barbeque on Saturday morning, all components having been retrieved from the scrap metal skip and surrounds. We suspect, though, that they won’t be selling on the barbeque to make money! And, yes, the sausages were very tasty!Jack Davenport and Peter Liddle cook sausages on the 'new' barbeque, converted from a scrap parts washer.

Monday 22nd May 2023

Alan, Alison and Tim have returned today from a rather too eventful weekend at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. Unfortunately, there isn’t time this evening to tell the full tale, which will no doubt be recounted in the next edition of the Trust’s journal, The Iron Horse.

A very shiny FR 20 being steamed on FridayLast Friday saw the FRT, team, bolstered on the day by Sam who had driven down from Preston and arrived at 08.00, join the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway’s own people in preparing Furness Railway No. 20 for a test steaming and a trip down the line in readiness for the three scheduled return trips on Saturday and Sunday.  We were immediately made welcome and tea served, a good start to the day, and that hospitality endured over the weekend. We have to compliment the P&B Loco department on its superb efforts to make FR 20 shine from top to bottom, something very much appreciated by the passengers the following day.

FR 20 heading down the valley with its trainThe test run revealed that the nine days of steamings at Didcot had made the boiler water incompatible with opening the regulator wide, the chalky water causing the loco to prime.

FR 20 and train approaching Furnace Sidings StationA change of water then ensued before the following day’s steamings.

Saturday’s trips were going well until the final one, when the right hand crosshead cotter sheared, which caused the piston to over-travel and damage the front cylinder cover. This brought the train to a halt with no further progress possible.  Fortunately, the train was near to Furnace Sidings station and the passengers were safely detrained. It was then necessary to tie up the crosshead and remove the cylinder cover before carriages and locomotive could be moved safely, and without further damage, to their respective sheds.

Obviously, this failure was a huge disappointment to everyone, and another locomotive had to be steamed for traffic the following day.

The pieces that had broken off the cylinder coverSunday was spent further examining FR 20 and preparing it for a return journey back to Preston to repairs. However, the FRT has this morning received the kind offer of assistance from the West Somerset Railway’s mechanical engineering department, which has a good relationship with the P&BR. A further examination of FR 20 will therefore take place on Wednesday including some non-destructive testing of components, after which it is hoped to be able to put together a plan of action for repairs. We will keep our readers informed as to progress.

In the mean time we wish to thank everyone at the P&BR for their friendship and assistance over the weekend.

We leave you on a lighter note with the news that when Alison placed an order on Friday evening for two sweets (for herself and Tim) at the Brewer’s Fayre Inn at Llanfoist, three turned up. Alison with two portions - will I make it??Luckily, Alan was delighted to help out in solving the dilemma!  Assistance rendered!

Tuesday 16th May 2023
