THE FURNESS RAILWAY TRUST

Registered Charity 1005211

Live Steam is the Furness Railway Trust's own folk group, raising funds for the Trust's projects. Now meet the members....

In strict alphabetical order:

Martin Baxter

Martin Baxter sings and plays keyboard, flute and clarinet.

Martin started playing with the band after joining the Furness Railway Trust to help with restoration work. A music teacher, Martin has played for many bands and orchestras during his career. He lives in Ulverston, where he is also an active member of the Ulverston Outsiders Amateur Dramatic Society.

Peter Birtwhistle Peter Birtwhistle plays guitar.

Peter, a long time railway enthusiast, lives in Grange-over-Sands. He has played for a number of other bands in his time and still occasionally accompanies fiddler Bob Clarke who played on the legendary radio ballad, "Ballad of John Axon"

George Fletcher

George Fletcher plays violin/fiddle.

George is a long serving member of the Furness Railway Trust and a carriage maintenance expert. Originally hailing from Grange-over-Sands, George now lives in Derby where he works for a railway engineering company. This makes it difficult for him to play in every gig, but he is still an occasional performer with the band. He also plays for three orchestras and enjoys bell ringing.

Steve Kowal Steve Kowal sings and plays guitar.

Steve, who lives in Richmond, North Yorkshire, is a former primary school headmaster who has discovered the joys of steam in his retirement. He sings and plays guitar with Live Steam when the location is convenient, and also with his local folk group, Dales Folk.

Alan Middleton

Alan Middleton sings and plays ukulele banjo.

Alan is a founder member of Live Steam, who has returned to the line up recently after a seven year break. He is also a Trustee of the Furness Railway Trust, edits the FRT Magazine The Iron Horse, and heads our Locomotive Department. Alan plays the ukulele banjo and sometimes includes a song from George Formby's repertoire.

Tim Owen

Tim Owen sings and plays the accordion and bodhran.

A founder member of Live Steam, he is Chairman of the Furness Railway Trust. A qualified management accountant, living in Cark-in-Cartmel, Tim now spends much of his time on railway preservation work and the associated fund-raising activities.
